For many families with little ones, the potty training journey is quite an undertaking. The last thing that you want to worry about when planning your Disney vacation, is losing any of your hard earned progress while away from home and your toddler’s normal routine. In this post, I’ll share with you the three things that really helped my potty training toddler when we visited the parks.
#1: Frida Folding Portable Potty Seat
My son always felt more comfortable using a regular toilet with a seat insert, rather than a smaller potty chair. At home, we installed one of these toilet seats that has a built-in kids seat. I highly recommend using these at home, it was honestly a game changer in our potty training journey. When we’re away from home, I wanted to be able to recreate that same set up for him as best I could. That’s when I found this folding, portable potty seat made by Frida Baby.
Here’s what we love about this seat: it’s made from plastic, so it’s easy to clean; it folds to a very compact size that fits in a diaper bag; has handles for your little one to hold on to so they feel more secure; and it comes with its own travel bag for easy storage. If your toddler is like mine, and prefers using a potty seat on the big potty, then this product is a must-have. It unfolds quickly, for those last minute potty trips where every second counts, and folds up just as quickly when you’re done. This is a staple in our bag right now; I carry it with us wherever we go.
#2: Disposable Toilet Seat Covers
In combination with our folding potty seat, I also found extra large, disposable toilet seat covers. Truthfully, I’m not the biggest fan of public restrooms, but with a potty training toddler, using them while we’re out is unavoidable. Knowing this, I set out to find a disposable liner that I could use if the situation called for it. I found this particular brand of liner to be larger than normal, providing extra coverage and preventing my toddler from touching everything inside the bathroom stall. Then, I simply place the folding potty seat on top and my toddler has a secure and more hygienic place to use the bathroom. This pack of 20 can be found on Amazon for $10 and it comes in three different patterns.
#3: Portable Urinal
I came across this product when I was searching for other travel potty training items. At first, I was unsure if my son would actually use it and if it really was leak proof as advertised but decided that for the price it was worth trying. Hands down, this has been an absolute life saver for when we’re on the go and there isn’t a bathroom nearby. In our experience, we’ve had no issues with leaking and my son had no problems using it. The capacity is large enough, while the overall design is still compact to fit into your bag when not in use. If you plan on doing any long car trips, perhaps on your way to Disney, I highly recommend this product! There are a couple different designs, and you can currently find these portable urinals on Amazon for $10.
Final Thoughts and Other Tips
We’re on the other side of our potty training adventure with our older son now, but it feels like just yesterday when we were first starting out. Trust me when I say that I understand how stressful it can be and that when you first start taking trips out in public it can also feel very overwhelming. Here are some other tips that I hope will help when visiting Disney with your potty training toddler:
Plan frequent trips to the potty into your schedule so that your toddler doesn’t feel like they’re missing out on the fun. Also, since it’s so hot in Florida, they’ll likely be drinking more and will need more frequent stops. Set an alarm on your phone, and when they hear that they’ll know it’s potty time!
Bring a few backup outfits in case of an accident. My philosophy is to plan for the worst and hope for the best. Accidents can and will happen. Being prepared can make all the difference. I always like to carry a wet/dry bag with us as well that I can put any clothes into if necessary. I’ve used this wet/dry bag from Bumkins for years. It’s currently on Amazon for $12.
Lastly, don’t forget to stop by the Baby Care Centers when visiting any of the four Walt Disney theme parks. Inside, you’ll find air conditioning and bathrooms that are typically very clean and a lot less crowded. If you find yourself in need of a place to change your toddler, or are looking for a break from the heat on one of your trips to the potty, this is a great place to stop. Check out my full post on the Disney Baby Care centers here for more information.
I like to think of potty training as more of a marathon, rather than a sprint. I hope that you find the above recommended products and additional tips as helpful to your family as they were to mine. For anyone in the middle of their potty training journey that needs to hear this, just remember you’re doing great!
