Disney Lightning Lane FAQ for Families With Young Kids

If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World with toddlers or preschoolers, you’ve probably come across Lightning Lanes and wondered if they’re something your family actually needs.

My husband and I visit Disney frequently with our two kids (ages 5 and 2 ½), and Lightning Lanes have become a regular part of how we plan our park days.

In this post, I’ll break down what Lightning Lanes are, when they’re worth it for families with young kids, and how to use them to make your day feel a little more manageable–especially when you’re trying to balance rides, meals, and nap schedules with little kids.

What Is Lightning Lane at Disney World?

Lightning Lane is Disney’s skip-the-line system that allows you to reserve a time to return to a ride instead of waiting in the regular standby line. When your return time arrives, you’ll enter the Lightning Lane, which is typically much shorter than the standby line.

Lightning Lanes are purchased and managed through the My Disney Experience app, and pricing can vary by day and park. Because availability is limited, the most popular rides can sell out quickly, especially during busy times of year.

If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you can purchase Lightning Lanes up to 7 days before your arrival. Other guests can purchase them 3 days in advance.

Types of Lightning Lane Passes

There are three different types of Lightning Lane passes you can choose from:

Lightning Lane Multi Pass

This option allows you to select up to 3 attractions and return times in advance. After you use your first Lightning Lane, you can continue booking additional ones throughout the day based on availability.

Lightning Lane Single Pass

This is used for select high-demand attractions that aren’t included with Multi Pass. You can choose your return time and purchase up to 2 Single Passes per day.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass

This option includes one-time access to every Lightning Lane attraction in a single park, including the most popular rides, without needing to select return times. However, it can only be used in one park per day, even if you plan to park hop.

Do Toddlers Need Lightning Lane?

Children under the age of 3 do not need a park ticket to enter Walt Disney World, which also means they don’t need their own Lightning Lane.

However, that doesn’t always mean Lightning Lanes won’t be a part of your day. If you’re visiting with older kids or planning to ride popular attractions, the rest of your group may still benefit from having them.

In most cases, toddlers can still go on the ride with you during your Lightning Lane return time, as long as they meet the ride requirements.

Is Lightning Lane Worth It With Young Kids?

A trip to Walt Disney World can be expensive, so it’s completely understandable to hesitate at the additional cost of Lightning Lanes.

For our family, they’ve been worth it because of how much time they save. Instead of spending a large part of the day waiting in line, we’re able to move on to the next ride, grab a meal, or take a break when we need one.

That time savings makes an even bigger difference when you’re traveling with little kids who don’t always enjoy long waits, especially when you’re also trying to plan your day around meals and naps.

Most of the time, we do choose to purchase Lightning Lanes, especially for shorter park days when we want to make the most of our time. But we don’t use them every visit. If your day is more flexible or you’re visiting during a less busy time, you may find you can skip them and still have a great experience.

For us, they’ve been a helpful tool for balancing the things our kids want to do with the pace that works best for our family, but they’re not a requirement for enjoying the park.

Which Rides Should You Use Lightning Lane For?

Since many attractions at Walt Disney World offer Lightning Lane, it can be hard to know where to start.

When we’re planning a park day, we like to take a few minutes to think about what we actually want to do, whether that’s rides, shows, or even a character meet-and-greet. Having a general plan going in makes it much easier to decide where Lightning Lanes will be the most helpful.

From there, we focus on the experiences that are both high on our must-do list and known to have longer wait times. Those are the attractions where Lightning Lane tends to make the biggest difference.

For example, at Hollywood Studios, we almost always reserve a Lightning Lane for Toy Story Mania!, and we’ve shared a full guide on what to expect when riding it with young kids. At Animal Kingdom, Kilimanjaro Safaris is one we prioritize early in the day, and it’s another attraction we’ve covered in more detail for families with toddlers and preschoolers.

It’s also worth noting that some entertainment options, like parades and nighttime shows, may offer Lightning Lane access for reserved viewing areas. This can save a surprising amount of time compared to waiting for a spot, especially in popular locations.

What Happens If Your Child Won’t Ride?

Sometimes, even with the best planning, there may be times when your child can’t, or simply doesn’t want to go on a ride and that’s completely normal.

If that happens, you still have options. Disney offers Rider Switch for many attractions, which allows one adult to stay with a child who isn’t riding while the rest of the group goes, and then switch without waiting in the full line again. This is especially helpful if you’re traveling with older kids who want to ride something a younger child can’t.

If you’re using Lightning Lane, everyone who plans to ride will need a Lightning Lane return time. You can still use Rider Switch, but it works best when your whole group has Lightning Lane access so you can take turns riding without waiting in the longer standby line.

In some cases, you may decide to skip the ride altogether and move on to something else. While you won’t always be able to recover that Lightning Lane selection, having a flexible plan can help take the pressure off and keep the day enjoyable for everyone.

Best Lightning Lane Strategy for Families With Young Kids

If you’re planning to use Lightning Lanes with young kids, it can help to prioritize return times earlier in the day and leave plenty of room in your schedule for meals, naps, and breaks.

When possible, we also try to choose attractions that are close to one another so we’re not walking back and forth across the park just to make our next reservation.

It’s also important to stay flexible. If you aren’t able to secure the attraction you were hoping for, check back throughout the day–additional times often become available.

If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, taking advantage of the earlier booking window can give you a better chance at securing popular return times.

Finally, focus on experiences that are in high demand and tend to have longer wait times. And if you’re using Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can book another attraction as soon as you’ve used your first one, which can help fit even more into your day. We’ve found that a little planning ahead of time can go a long way in making the day feel more relaxed.

Final Thoughts

Lightning Lanes can be a helpful tool for making the most of your day at Walt Disney World, especially when you’re visiting with toddlers or preschoolers. Reducing the amount of time you spend waiting in line can make a big difference in how smoothly your day goes.

For our family, we often choose to include them in our budget ahead of time, but we don’t use them every visit. You can still have a great day without Lightning Lanes, especially with a flexible plan and realistic expectations.

If you’re curious what that looks like, you can read more about one of our recent afternoons at Hollywood Studios without using Lightning Lanes here.

At the end of the day, Lightning Lanes are just one way to help make your park day a little easier. Whether you decide to use them or not, having a plan that works for your family and being willing to adjust as needed, will go a long way in making the experience enjoyable for everyone.
