Planning Your Trip
Slinky Dog Dash is one of the most popular rides in Hollywood Studios, and wait times are often quite long, definitely longer than most toddlers are willing to stand in line.
If you’re planning to rope drop Hollywood Studios, heading straight to Slinky Dog Dash first thing in the morning is one of the best ways to experience it with a shorter wait.
For families visiting later in the day, like we often do, using Lightning Lane can be a big help. With Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can reserve return times for select attractions and skip the standby line.
Slinky Dog Dash is one of the most in-demand rides, so availability can go quickly. If you’re hoping to book it, try to make your selections as early as possible and check back throughout the day in case additional times open up.

The Queue
The queue for Slinky Dog Dash is just as thoughtfully themed as the rest of Toy Story Land, with oversized toys, games, and details that make you feel like you’re right in Andy’s backyard.
One thing to keep in mind, especially when visiting with toddlers, is that portions of the line are outdoors. Some areas are covered and offer shade, while others are fully in the sun, which can make longer waits feel even tougher for little ones.
Because of this, it’s worth planning ahead, whether that means riding earlier in the day, using Lightning Lane, or being prepared with snacks, water, and a few small distractions to help pass the time.
The Ride Experience
Slinky Dog Dash is a family roller coaster that mixes some gentle thrills with really fun Toy Story theming. You’ll ride in Slinky Dog cars, sitting two across, with a lap bar that comes down to keep everyone secure.
The ride has a few launch points where it speeds up, along with small hills, turns, and some mild drops as you move through Andy’s backyard. It’s definitely faster-paced than a lot of other rides in the park, but still designed to be something families can enjoy together.
Overall, it’s a smooth ride, but it can feel a little more intense than other “starter” attractions, especially for younger or more cautious kids.
Toddler/Preschooler Experience
Every child is different when it comes to rides like this, and you know your little one best. While Slinky Dog Dash is considered a family coaster, it can still feel like a big step for younger riders.
Before riding, we spent some time helping our toddler understand what to expect. Watching ride videos, talking through how it works, and even seeing the coaster in action ahead of time can all help take away some of the unknown.
Our toddler was well over the height requirement and was really excited to try it, but we still made sure it was his choice. Giving them that control can make a big difference in how confident they feel going on the ride.
In the end, he loved it, but I do think this is one of those rides where it depends on your child’s personality. If they enjoy faster rides and don’t mind a few small drops, this could be a really fun first roller coaster. For more cautious kids, it might be something to work up to.
Is Slinky Dog Dash Worth the Wait?
Slinky Dog Dash is a really fun, well-themed coaster and one of the more unique ride experiences in Walt Disney World. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular.
That said, for families visiting with toddlers, long wait times can be tough. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend waiting more than about 45 minutes, and realistically, most little kids won’t want to either.
If wait times are higher than that, you’re usually better off trying to ride earlier in the day, booking a Lightning Lane, or coming back at a different time. You’ll still get to enjoy the ride without pushing your day (and your toddler’s patience) too far.
Final Thoughts
For our family, Slinky Dog Dash ended up being a really special milestone–our toddler’s first roller coaster.
We spent time preparing him for what to expect and ultimately let him decide if he wanted to ride, which made a big difference in how comfortable he felt.
While it was a great first coaster for him, I don’t think this will be the right first starting point for every toddler. The launches, small hills, and faster pace can feel like a lot for younger kids or those who take a little longer to warm up to new rides.
If your child is ready for it, though, this is one of those rides that can quickly become a family favorite, and a really memorable first roller coaster experience.
